What is LTE? What is 4G? What is 4G LTE? What’s the difference between 4G and LTE? Confused, we all are. All we know it is the fastest way to surf the internet at the moment on my phone or tab. Yes in simple terms, that is totally right. 4G stands for 4th generation mobile telecom network which succeeds 3G and is faster and better. Then comes LTE now what is LTE? Okay, I understand 2G, then 3G, then 4G and next is 5G, but what is the LTE in between 4G and 5G.
To explain everything, let us understand that mobile networks get a new generation every ten years or so. Starting from 1981 (1G – analog network) to 2001 (2G – digital network) to 2010(3G Supports multimedia, internet bandwidth, and at least 200 Kb/s data transmission rates ). Finally, in 2011/2012, the 4G network came into being with packet switching technology that allows for gigabit speeds at least in theory, with different implementations achieving different speeds.
What is 4G Network
In 2008, the concept of 4G mobile networks was defined, which laid specifications about how 4G networks should differ from 3G networks and are called as IMT-Advanced is actually what is LTE. The IMT-Advanced stands for International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced standard that lays out specifications that classify a 4G network. Following properties define a 4G network –
- The network must be an all packet switching network.
- Have maximum data transfer of 100 Mbps for high mobility such as car or train.
- Have maximum data transfer rates of 1 Gbps for local/nomadic mobility conditions such as sitting or walking.
- Scalable bandwidths of up to 1Gbps should be possible over less than 67 MHz bandwidth.
- Carry smooth handovers across heterogeneous networks.
What is LTE
It is a good practice to maintain a gap between 2 generation of mobile networks, this way the succeeding generation of the mobile network can provide a big jump in both technology and user activities support. As telecom operators decided to move from 3G to 4G networks, they realized 4G network requirements to be fairly far out of their reach. This gap could only be overcome by slowly developing infrastructure and gradually moving to the new 4G. This evolution would take years to happen and technologies were still being defined and improved upon. it was decided to name it LTE – Long Term Evolution. So this clearly answers what is LTE.
Since newer technologies were being constantly developed, and newer practices were being applied, so came along LTE Advanced. Conceptualized in late 2009, and first put into commercial usage around 2013-14, it is an advancement of specifics outlined LTE and another step forward to realizing total 4G networks. This includes advancement of technologies such as
- 2G and 2.5G with GPRS and EDGE
- UMTS, HSPA with 3G
- LTE network and 4G standards
- IP Multimedia systems
Further Development in IP Multimedia systems has lead to Volte or Voice Over LTE. This uses voice service over the packet switching network or LTE network, making a transition from circuit switched network. This benefits by removing the need for circuit switched networks for transmission of voice calls. It also benefits by increasing the voice and data capacity by 3 times over 3G and 6 times over 2G GSM. It also frees up additional bandwidth.
What is LTE Phone
A phone which primarily supports LTE and Volte is a LTE phone. It should also support preceding technologies such as 2G, 3G technologies for an all round network coverage in case the person is traveling abroad. Today’s phones fully support LTE and Volte and are geared for maximum data transfer speeds, as most of them use Qualcomm’s modem processor for optimum data transfers. Some of the recent good LTE phones that also support Volte are –
