The desktop computer is the grand daddy of innovation. It is the gadget that brought the word Personal Computer into the picture. A desktop PC is what brought all the world into technology and made it totally accessible. Desktop computers are totally responsible for bringing the computing revolution to the edges of the world.
Now all of a sudden in the past couple of years, there’s a total influx of laptops, netbooks, tablets, and big screen mobiles. And the focus is off the desktop computers. People don’t seem to be buying desktop computers anymore. Most people think the desktop is dying a gradual death.
One of the most important reasons why desktop PCs are going out of the limelight is earlier people used them for the basic tasks, such as writing an email, surfing the web, writing a document, making a presentation, and more. The new portables like laptop, notebook, netbook, chromebook and the handhelds like mobile and tablets have taken over for these menial tasks.
The fact of the matter is most of the user base of the digital world is made of consumers and very few actually form part of what is creators or power users. More than 80% of the computing user base nowadays makes up of the light users, who need to go as far as a laptop which is itself a power use for them. In fact the common user can now do 99% of their stuff on smart phones and tablets.
But we are talking about the ‘Desktop Computers’. Where have they disappeared in all of the new shift that has happened? In fact, desktop computer machines have ventured more into the mainstream of what is called real work. The real computational power, the brains behind all of the creations, and the power usages of the computing world.
Also the the field has split into devices for different usages. Gone is the time, when you need to switch the computer wait for it to boot and then do the simplest tasks. Enter mobile, which is always on and can do all of the those tasks and much more.
The for those who want viewing, and creating simplest of things like artists, and writers – tablets have taken over. A bigger screen is good for creating content as well as viewing it on a personal manner. Tablets yet remain personal but provide a larger and a more portable experience.
What Happened To Desktop Computers
So what do the desktop do? Why are they still being sold? Who buys them? What do they actually do? Why some people still love desktop computers? A lot of reasons provide answers to all these questions. In fact with the development of the mobile and the portables, even the desktop PCs have developed.
The desktops PCs development is only visible to the few who use them, and they rather use them pretty well. If the mobiles have become smarter, tablets can do work, and laptops have become more powerful, then you can safely say today’s powerful desktops are way more powerful than yesteryear’s supercomputers.
Yes that is correct. Desktops today have reached unfathomable heights. Comparing the handhelds like mobiles or tablets and laptops to them is like toy plane comparing to a fighter plane. Desktops are pretty powerful, and they have the capabilities to get even more powerful if the user wants.
Comparing A Laptop To A Desktop Computer
Comparing a laptop to a desktop PC does not make sense. Its like comparing a helicopter to a fighter jet. Laptop these days have no doubt become powerful, they lack a lot of things. Most importantly desktops tend to have more powerful components available for them.
Desktops are more powerful, faster and last longer for the same price than laptops do. Also Laptops tend to operate in hotter conditions due to inferior cooling compared to desktops. Desktops at the higher end add fans on top of fans to cool better. At advanced level, desktop computers even come with liquid cooling technology which takes things to another level as far as performance is concerned.
Other than desktops come with a separate keyboard and a mouse that can be top of the line and be ergonomic which enhance typing efficiency. Where as even the best laptops in comparison have mediocre keyboards, and a track pad which is highly inefficient.
Mouse at the higher end have great accuracy and respond to the slightest movements, which come very handy during professional gaming, media work such as video and sound editing, 3D, and animation. Laser mouse are often top of the line, and are some what expensive for top notch users.
Another great aspect of using a desktop is custom display. You can choose your own display which have mind boggling resolution and support finest of art work in graphics. High end image processing, 3D modelling, animation, Rendering, and Pro gaming are some of the uses.
Graphics on the system on a laptop can at mot impressive, while on the desktop the options are way beyond impressive. The graphics cards for a desktop can easily have double the performance compared to the one on the best laptop. Add to the this you even can have 2 graphics cards work together in a desktop offering more than 4 times performance of the best laptop out there.
The best motherboards in the industry are manufactured only for desktops, and laptops dont even come into the picture for them. The best motherboards feature the latest technologies, and allow for rapid scaling of resources. This is not even thinkable in laptops.
New technologies in laptops arrive often 2-3 years late, and dont allow scaling of any kind except at most RAM chip replacement and Hard disk swaps, which is often not so much. Compare that to a desktop computer and you can connect 4 more hard disks if you want, that too each one can reach 14TB capacity. Totally unthinkable for a laptop. Make it into 4 and you have 76TB space. Laptops have a max of 2 TB single hard disk. Pathetic.
Another system performance element is RAM, desktop with a great motherboard can support upto 4 RAM chips effectively allowing for 1024 GB RAM or 1TB. Where as the best laptop at about $7000 may have max 128GB RAM, that too, a slower version.
Beyond this, every 2-3 years you can upgrade a desktop with a $200-300 upgrade and stay relevant for another 2-3 years, where as a laptop is nearly dead or out of the game. A $1500 laptop will cost around $1000-1200 for the same specs for a desktop computer, and yet is more powerful, faster, long lasting and is upgradable.
This above read may sound biased towards a desktop PC but is not. While this article, is written on a laptop, which is used most of the time, the only thing good about is the portability. The fact that I can take carry this anywhere and do my work. This holds very good, if I have to visit another city, which wouldn’t have been a possibility in case of a desktop machine.
Again, as mentioned before its only about the use that counts what kind of machine does one need. For me, I write and occasionally do some app development so the laptop holds true. But, for the one whose work demands the top of the line performance a laptop would just be a show dampener.
What Kind Of People Use Desktops
As we talked before the usages matter when it comes to a person buying a desktop, some people are still hard bent upon buying desktops. They have obvious reasons for making such a purchase. Here’s the list of type of users that buy desktop PCs.
Various types of desktop PCs are ::
- Companies – Companies have a very solid reason for using desktop computers as their choicest machines. They get more bang for their buck from the heavy set machines. Desktops tend to outlast laptops by years, are upgradable, and cost less for the same configuration. According to figures close to 70% companies, use desktops are their machines, and these tend to last for over 7 years, totally outlasting a laptop.
- Gamers – Gamers know the importance of a beastly machine. This only happens when you put custom configurations in a gaming desktop machine. High end professional gamers tend to use the choicest parts for topping the performance at every bottleneck. This is totally unthinkable at the laptop level. A laptop would simply burn out at such a performance. Top of the line gamers use resolutions that are even way beyond gaming consoles let alone a laptop.
- Scientists – Scientists need top performance for their own reasons. Its called computation. They computations happen at supercomputer level at neck breaking speed, sometimes for days at end. This cannot happen with a laptop. The laptop processor would fail in such a scenario. Imagine a space scientist that needs computations that needs many zillions of computations of millions of data. Thats why they have desktops called workstations.
- High End Programmers – They generally like to have a machine that is very peppy and has a lot of resources at disposal. If someone was to do graphics programming the normal laptop wont be sufficient, and will get choppy and overheated. This decreases performance and wastes time. A programmer hates such situations.
- Media Professionals – Media professional use of a lot of graphics resources cause they work at very high resolutions, that require processing. Also high end image processing, 4k video processing, 3D animation, 3D modelling are some of the most taxing applications one can do on the desktop, where laptops dont fit the bill.
