Does it substitute the sunlight that plants need so much for their growth?
For fair understanding, a Led grow light or led plant light is a man-made or artificial light source used to replace sunlight in a grow room. A grow room is a controlled environment for indoor growing of plants. The grow light is an electrical light, which emits the light frequencies needed for photosynthesis by plants. Grow lights are used to provide light spectrum similar to that of the sun, or a more customized spectrum as per the need of the plant. There are different types of grow lights, but LED grow lights are gaining traction because of being more cost effective as they consume less electricity and last longer too. The best part of using LED grow lights is that they don’t generate a lot of heat, which means these can be placed closer to the plants, optimizing the light intensity and better response by plants. It is good to use the LED lights along with a timer, which can automatically switch on and off the lights. The ideal time duration for light exposure for plants is 12-14 hours. This can vary according to plant types and the stage of plant growth like germination, sprouting etc. Some plants may even require only 6 hours or so of light exposure. It’s best to place the LED grow lights directly above the plants, so the plants tend to grow straight up. It also ensures a more uniform supply of light to the plant. Herbs and greens tend to respond better to grow lights, whereas tomatoes, cucumbers, and some other vegetables respond in different ways according to the variety too.
Plants respond best to red, far red, blue and green colored LED grow lights. Although plants can grow sufficiently in red light alone, the growth is somewhat unhealthy with leaf deformities. Adding a small amount of blue colored light 10% makes the growth better and the plants remain healthy. Adding a little of green light to these both colors still makes the growth a little healthier. The usage of LED grow lights varies according to plant growth phase. The seedling phase requires a light duration of 16 hours a day and 8 hours off. During the vegetative phase, the lights should be turned on for 18+ hours and 6 hours off. During the last flowering/fruiting stage lights should be 12 hours on and 12 hours off.
The plants also need dark periods for flowering and proper growth. Although both lights on and off phases need to be present, the duration of each phase also depends on species of the plant. The lights should be switched on and off at set times to make a proper schedule for the plants. The lights setup is part of your grow room or grow tents.
